Gig Review- Biffy Clyro 20th October 2009 Q Awards Show, Kentish Town Forum

A week after the Maida Vale Session this gig was still a little treat for me. Originally I only bought tickets for the Southampton and London dates of the tour, this was announced later and I couldn't pass. This would be the first Biffy show I went to with out Rianna so it felt odd straight away. However because she is fab she came and said hello to me in the queue. I decided not to queue all day for this gig so arrived there at 3pm hung out with this guy which is always nice. Didn't see the Biffy guys but did see their manager Dee Bahl who gave me a smile- I've never actually seen him with the band before. Tour manager Neil was out and about as well.

The only cool thing to mention that happened before the show was hearing the sound check. It may have got me prematurely excited. They sound checked Strung To Ribcage! I was listening to them sound check all the songs they had played at Maida Vale- Born On A Horse, God & Satan, That Golden Rule and then out of nowhere they started playing it. At first I didn't recognise it because it was muffled through the closed doors. Then the doors were opened by some crew who had come out for cigarettes. Strung To Your Ribcage is one of the songs on my dream Biffy set list. I text Rianna straight away so excited. I know that sound checking a song doesn't automatically mean it'll be played but the fact they practiced it gave me hope.

Got let in on time and got down to the barrier in front of Simon/ centre-ish so all was good. The support for this evening were The Boxer Rebellion and Frightened Rabbit. When I found out Frightened Rabbit were supporting it made me feel a lot better about the price of the ticket, not that it was that expensive but for a Biffy gig it was. The Boxer Rebellion were ok, a perfectly fine support act but not a band I would look up after the show. In parts they reminded me of an American sounding Editors. Frightened Rabbit were of course amazing, such a talented band I can't remember their set exactly but it featured two new songs including Swim, Until You Can't See Land. That band should have much more success than they do, lets hope things change for them next album.

The band finally arrived on stage, I'm getting the impression the choice of attire this tour is smart instead same colour jeans- invisible t-shirts. Simon wearing the burgundy suit he wore for Jools Holland, Ben in shirt and trousers and James wearing his, now becoming trademark waistcoat (hence why I stopped wearing mine, too matching for my liking). As this wasn't the actual start of their tour they didn't have all their own lights etc but god, I still got blinded during That Golden Rule. Having That Golden Rule and last years opener Living Is A Problem has been a great way to start the show in my opinion.

Who's Got A Match? followed by Born On A Horse is a stroke of genius, Who's Got A Macth? is such a crowd pleaser and always gets everybody singing along. I mean, c'mon, how could anyone resist lead bass? Born On A Horse has surely got to become a crowd favourite, I did feel a bit like I was one of the few who knew the words but I had so much fun I didn't care. It feels like the band are having a lot of fun playing it live. Who knew that the twins would experience so much joy from a keyboard, wood block and vibraslap.

Love Has A Diameter and Get Fucked Stud are definitely two of my favourites from Puzzle so I'm very glad they're still in the set list. Love Has A Diameter of course resulted in a mass sing-a-long with 'woahs' going on much longer than the song was, which made Simon smile and offer a small Thank You in return. Get Fucked Stud always has so much energy live, I adore it. When the twins start singing, thats my favourite bit "Skyline is burning red....follow my lead to survive" it gets me every time.

Everything from Now I'm Everyone onwards played like a dream. Even though singing back to them "This is the one..." over and over again, I still find tricky! Justboy was quite unexpected. Neil, their tour manager had hinted at them bringing back some old songs which to me said- Blackened Sky and I was right. Having never heard it before I'm glad they played it. However I never could have guessed what other songs from that album they would play- Hero Management and Kill The Old, Torture Their Young! I was awe struck, I don't think I believed they were actually playing them. It took all my might not to do that little finger nod thing I do to the isolated bass notes at the beginning of Hero Management. I enjoyed both songs so much more than I could have imagined. Since the gig both songs have been stuck in my head which is no bad thing.
First time hearing Many Of Horror and its such a beautiful song. File it under 'almost guaranteed to make Donna cry' along with Breatheher and Machines. I hate to use the term power ballad but essentially thats what it is. I hope they play it more in the future.

The encore has been everybodys favourite but I've quite liked it. When I knew they were playing As Dust Dances it made me think of Incubus and their attitude towards encores. Its better to play 'softer' &/or 'happier' songs than to play 'harder/ angrier' songs that get the audience all pumped up for the wrong reasons and then send them on their way. As Dust Dances makes me feel calm and peaceful for some reason. Don't get me wrong I'm not calling it dull or boring, far from it especially the latter half of the song but it puts me in a contented thoughtful kinda mood. Who knows I could be talking out of my ass right now I'm not sure, its just how it makes me feel. Playing it with Mountains sends the crowd away happy and uplifted. It made me very happy- the ending joyous.

(spot the Donna! Sing us a song)

As I left the venue completely bruised and battered from the crowd knowing that I would was seeing Biffy again- I was not experiencing the usual post gig depression, I was very happy.

Gig Review- Biffy Clyro 13th October 2009 Radio 1 Maida Vale Sessions

It was all quite odd how my attendance of this show came about. I had read on Biffy's forum that there was going to be some sort of special announcement on Zane Lowe's radio show, of course I listened. He spoke of a special performance that Biffy were going to do at Maida Vale studios for Radio 1, that it would be broadcast live on the radio and fi
lmed for the internet. The only way you could win tickets for the event was to enter via the BBC ticket service where they had 50 pairs to give out. My heart sank when I found this out, I desperately wanted to go. Even though I already had tickets to see them on the 20th and 24th there was something about seeing them so close to my birthday that made me want to see them so badly.

So I entered, got everyone I know to enter though the allocation made it nearly impossible for me to win. Then one night I was sat browsing on my laptop, checking my emails every two seconds and I get an excited phone call from Rianna saying she had won a pair of the tickets and she was taking me. I could not believe it, I swear I could have criedI was so excited. At that point though I couldn't have even guessed how good it was going to be.

The day of the performance was luckily also my day off so as usual me and Rianna went to queue earlier than needed. There may have only been 100 people in the audience but I still wanted to be at the front. Maida Vale studios is one of those random places which is in the middle of suburbia so we felt a little odd sitting on a wall outside retirement flats. Not much happened during the day we went to the pub for some food, went inside to ask where we needed to queue from- just the usual waiting around really. Not sure if the Biffy guys were inside or not, we went and sat back on the wall. That's when it happened.

There had been a photographer waiting outside for a while, randomly hanging around and taking pictures of trees. Next thing we know Biffy Clyro and their tour manager Neil where outside having their picture taken. Some members of Biffy's crew were also there, chatting and having cigarettes. We sat and watched them for a while because there was no way we were going to interrupt them. After they had finished we thought they had gone inside to stay but next thing I know they're walking down the road towards us with members of their crew. They were obviously going to get dinner and a drink before the show. Times like these it's hard to know what to do for the best. They obviously don't want to be pestered by fans but then I would love to meet all of them (I met Ben at the Marmaduke Duke gig). Whilst it felt like yet another wasted opportunity, I don't wanna become one of 'those fans'- the really annoying rude ones who the band begin to resent. So we just sat there and let them pass. I kinda have to believe we made the right choice. Some other guys stopped them and asked Simon where they had to queue and some other stuff. Whilst being polite to them, it was obvious he wasn't gonna stop and chat for a while.

Slightly dejected but still looking forward to the performance we queued at the correct door and acted like idiots. If I can get my pictures from my mobile to on here I will (right now I can't) but it involved Rianna, her Columbo coat and my Ray Bans. Then when we got our tickets stickered Number 1 and 2 respectively we started doing Austen Powers impressions- it all got a bit random.

At 8 o' clock we were finally let inside, all we were told was it was downstairs- we knew nothing of what would lie in the studio. So as I did my little shuffle down the stairs and walked into the studio I was kinda overcome. The studio was tiny. In the middle towards the back of the wall was where the band were going to perform with the gear already set up. Either side of that were their travel cases and various guitars. In front of their equipment, on the left was a string quartet (the same women as the December tour I believe) and on the right a brass section- a string AND a brass section, I couldn't believe it. To the very far right of the room behind some decks was Zane Lowe who welcomed us into the room. With it being a studio it was of course all on one level, so as me and Rianna took our place just in front of where Simon stands we realised how close we would actually be to the band as they performed. I think we may have squealed. Thats when Zane said he understood how weird it is to be that close to your favourite band but to rock out anyway. 'Rock out anyway!' I could barely talk and spent the whole time thinking what am I gonna do with my arms? Funny but true.

Before I had time to figure out what exactly I would do with my arms, Zane was back on the air introducing us to the listeners and introducing Biffy Clyro to us. They walked out to just in front of us and I could not believe what was happening or where I was. If I reached out I would have been touching Simon's guitar it was really strange. I was pretty much looking at him straight in the face. When Rianna won the tickets I would have been happy to hear 2 songs and we ended up with 11.
First up was That Golden Rule, the first single off of Only Revolutions and the first opportunity for strings! Is it me or do strings make everything sound better? I love it when shows start strong and the strings were amazing on it. Don't get me wrong its perfectly fine without but it was nice to have had them there, it added a little something extra. This was followed by Living Is A Problem... which of course meant more strings and was awesome. I'm a very lucky to have heard it twice with strings now.
As this show was part of promo for Only Revolutions it was the first time hearing some of the new songs live and my first opportunity to hear two songs for the first time. Born On A Horse I already know is one of my new favourite Biffy songs. Funky, scuzzy, probably the grooviest thing they've ever done. It features James on a small keyboard and bass (it keeps on getting better with that man!) and Ben adding a woodblock and vibraslap to his set-up it was so much fun I loved it. James commented that it was the funkiest thing they've done and yet no one was dancing- to which me and Rianna straight away protested and we most definitely were.

I'll be honest, Bubbles- I wasn't so keen on when I first heard it but as with many songs only because I don't like it so much on first listen doesn't mean I won't love it later. Thats very much the case with this song and live it cemented my love for it. Kinda poppy yet soaring it gets better every time I hear it.

God & Satan I had the pleasure of hearing the very first time it was played in public at Union Chapel last year and its still a beautiful song. Some people have said its a bit cheesy but I think its a very sincere song. Seeing it at Maida Vale was very similar to seeing it at Union Chapel, as it started just Simon and his guitar it was very quiet so lovely. Cloud Of Stink is kinda proggy, fast and very cool, it begins with Simon almost singing in a falsetto can't wait to hear it again.
Now time for the brass! The Captain is the second single from Only Revolutions and I don't care what anybody says- I love it. Uplifting and fun, how can anybody not love the random addition of brass to a song! I'm sure at some point in the future Biffy will perform with a brass section again but I'm very glad to say I've heard The Captain live with a brass section and it was awesome.

To finish the set, probably two of their most well known songs Machines and Mountains. Both songs resulted in mass sing-a-longs which was very cool and with that it was all over. Too soon if you ask me but I'm still amazed they played that many songs. I feel extremely lucky to have been to a performance which had so much effort put into to it. I'm also very lucky and slightly embarrassed that the video of the performance is so readily available online! Both me and Rianna get some prime slots in the video during Machines we both look so serious its quite funny. I'll post the videos after the set list for anyone who wants to see and hear it.

Trulyjess' Christmas Losers Challenge

So I decided to finally take part in a Youtube challenge. This seemed like a good opportunity to kick my arse into gear and try and lose a little bit of weight again. I hope I can get under 13st by the end of the year but it just seems like my body is not co-operating at all. Oh well I can only but try

Gig Review- Tori Amos 7th September Symphony Hall, Birmingham and 10th & 11th September Hammersmith Apollo, London

So, Tori was back way before anyone had anticipated. I was fully prepared to wait quite a few years before she toured again properly and yet here I was again hitting the tour trail. Such a hectic amazing week followed.

7th March Symphony Hall, Birmingham

Loaded up with everything I could fit into a smallish bag because I was going from the venue to London, off to Birmingham I went. The bag was very heavy! I had never been to the Symphony Hall so it took a while for me to actually find it (how can it be that hard to find a venue that large?) Of course there were people there already, faces I have seen many times before and others I knew very well, like Lucy. It was good to meet up with her again. We chatted about everything that was new with me (job, moving etc) until my friends from FeelTheWord forums arrived.

At this show it was only me Ian, Karl and Sam but we had such a lovely day together. Unusual for the day of a Tori show- the weather was glorious the whole day. Of course Tori meet and greet meant I got sunburnt; bright red chest!

Ian and Karl had never met Tori, so as Mindy came out to organise us, we made sure they were in front of me and Sam. We needn't have worried as we were near the front of the queue. As Tori came out she had her daughter Tash with her, she's looking so much like Tori. It was Tash's last day of being on tour, which Tori made reference to during the show. As I walked up to Tori, again I never went to hug I never do but she automatically went in for a hug which I thought was lovely and as usual even though I've met her a few times now I was super nervous. She asked how I was and I asked her how the the tour was going for her and was she enjoying it- just general chit chat. Enthusiastically she replied to all I asked and said she was loving the tour so far and how the fans were reacting. I had my picture taken with her (I decided I have enough signed things) of course she looked gorgeous and I'm actually ok with the picture.

Once Sam had finished speaking to her we spent the rest of the day just hanging out and generally having a lovely day. We had a drink in Starbucks, had some food in Pizza Hut and looked at all the shoes we couldn't afford but really wanted. Of course we arrived back early so me and Ian could indulge our inner merchandise whores- (t-shirt, mug, necklace, program....oh dear!) The foyer ceiling of the symphony hall is for some reasoned mirrored, so as I sat down and gazed up at my sunburnt chest I also got a flash of white boob! This then lead onto me declaring to everyone within earshot that I had 'panna cotta boobies' Why can't I ever act remotely normal the day of a gig

Lets clear something up, the Birmingham Symphony Hall is actually a cruise ship in disguise. Ian said it looked like a spaceship but he's entirely wrong. Polished laminated floors, red seats and way too many shiny railings it was definitely a cruise ship masquerading as a venue. Earlier on in the day we all had checked our tickets to see if we would be sat close together as we bought our tickets separately; how me missed the fact we would actually be sat together was beyond me and we spent the next 10 minutes laughing at our own stupidity whilst we waited for the support act to come on.

Tori's support acts are unfortunately hit or miss; acoustic-y singer/songwriter types who aren't particularly mind blowing and won't veer from the middle of the road. Luckily for us One eskimO were very very good. Whilst still being mostly acoustic they were more than that. Lots of interesting electronic sounds, samples, a cool guitarist who went all Dragonforce on us and did string tapping thing, a drummer who didn't have a whole drum kit as it were and a (gorgeous) bass player who could play a bass and a trumpet at the same time. They were honestly a joy to listen to and every show I looked forward to seeing them again. Of course everything had an acoustic basis, the interesting quirks came from a sample pad the drummer had. I'm not a big fan of sampling but they somehow made it work. Their album has come out since the Tori shows and I was sad that my favourite song from their set wasn't on it. Hurricanes was this soaring catchy grower of a song with amazing drumming that sucked you in. My other favourite from their set which I'm glad to say is on their album is UFO. As the name suggests it has this spacey weird sound to it with a definite laid back groove. I will definitely go and see them again when they do some headline shows.

As it were on previous tours, Tori opens and ends her shows with the same songs. You would imagine that that would make it less exciting but you couldn't be further from the truth. So as Tori arrived on stage a vision in blue (one of the nicer dresses this tour) I was excited to hear Give. An amazing album opener it was absolutely the right song to open with on this tour. Live it was nothing short of amazing every night. Dark, melodic, just so gorgeous to hear.

Other favourite from this show included surprisingly- Starling. Not one of my absolute favourites from Abnormally Attracted To Sin, it took on a more interesting tone live. I always felt the album version sounded too muddled, almost like a demo. Live it seemed more cohesive and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Carbon live is awesome. It has one of those piano parts which translates really well in a live setting and sounds very impressive. Kudos as usual to Matt Chamberlain for being a brilliant drummer; the drumming in Carbon was so good and makes the song what it is.

Pandora's Aquarium was a bit of a Holy Fuck moment for me. Its one of those songs I never expect to hear but love. Tori's voice was lovely throughout even on the high notes of the beginning of the verses. And the bass....don't get me started on bass lines....it was yummy to say the least.

The Tori solo section was for some reason this tour called the Lizard Lounge and it played like a dream in Birmingham. She started by talking about Tash leaving the tour to go back to school, she then sang John Denver's Leaving On A Jet Plane. It was a lovely little tribute to her daughter and also a cover I can't remember her ever doing. What happened next I still can't believe- it segued into Sister Janet! With Tori, I can't do favourites and its always easier for me to list the very few songs I don't like rather than trying to pick one out of so many that I love. But Sister Janet is one song I absolutely adore but is played seldom. When I heard the first few notes, I jumped in my seat a little and looked at Ian with a face that read- shocked! So beautiful, I tried my best not to cry like the first and only other time I've heard it (in 2005). This was followed by a wonderful rendition of Cloud On My Tongue which even though I've heard quite a few times, never bores me.

The rest of the show followed on well, was very much looking forward to Strong Black Vine which was again great at every show, perfect closer to the the set. During this show though her in ear monitors stopped working cue a hurried Marcel (sound engineer) running on stage and fiddling with her pack whilst Tori sang an improv about it. Tori is still the queen of a cute improv. Due to me having to get the train I left during the countdown in Big Wheel. I said my goodbyes to the others and took my big bag to Birmingham New Street and onto London.

10th September Hammersmith Apollo

We knew in advance that there would be no meet and greet at this show so there really was no need to get there insanely early (like I usually do!) Instead me and the lovely people of FeelTheWord Forums met up. We went and had dinner in the pub and generally caught up and had fun. Any one who knows me, understands that seeing Tori at the Hammersmith Apollo makes me nervous because of certain people and this time was no different unfortunately. I became very quiet and just couldn't really deal with it so I went and sat down in my seat nearly straight away, waited for One EskimO to come on. This time I was in front of the drummer which was interesting to watch.

Tori had on my favourite dress from this tour a black with white stripes and played an absolute gem of a show. There were many strong songs back to back. A lot of people aren't keen on Flavor but I've always loved it, live it didn't let down. It took on a different atmosphere to that on the album and the piano was beautiful. Space dog with the band is always a treat, having heard it solo in the past, the drums make it so much better. Followed by Pancake which is one of my favourites from Scarlet's Walk and one I've always wanted to hear live, it was a shame we didn't get the Ohio bridge but that didn't detract from how amazing that song is live. Then another Scarlet's Walk favourite, Carbon driving drums and piano I love everything about it.

Shock of the evening- fucking Raspberry Swirl!!!! Even though I knew she had been playing it over the tour I never expected to hear it myself. Dancing may have happened- love love love it! Words fail me just so awesome

Overall one of the best shows I've ever seen her play.

When we realised what date the show fell on we all guessed that the set list would play out in a certain way- we were really wrong and pleasantly surprised. However there was the small case of the weirdest yet also the nicest meet and greet I've attended.

Of course I went early, we knew there would be a meet and greet today so me and Ian met up, followed by Judy, Nancy and Loz. For some reason they moved the meet and greet from where they usually have it over to in front of a wall near the entrance! Me and Lucy were not happy- it was all wrong! For years they had it in the same place, it felt odd to be standing somewhere else. Luckily for me it meant we were in the shade most of the day so no more sunburn for Donna.

Tori came out at the usual time and worked her way down the group of fans. There were quite a few people there but the way they had it set up worked very well and everything was very relaxed. So as Tori came over to me I decided to have another picture taken with her as I've got lots of signed things already. She stepped over to in front of me, said 'Hey how are you?' I love the little glint of recognition in her voice when you've already seen her that week and how ever many other times before. I said I was fine and yet again thanked her for playing Sister Janet, that I understand she doesn't play it that often and I was lucky enough to have see it before that it means a lot to me and how much I adore that song. She looked at me with such emotion and with outstretched arms said come here and gave me this huge hug- it was such a lovely moment for me. Standing back with a smile she asked are we having a picture? I said yes, if possible then gave my camera to Mindy. Before Mindy could take the picture Tori looked at me straight in the face in that way she does and exclaimed 'you're so pretty- look at you! Really gorgeous. I love your make-up and look at your outfit so nice all co-ordinated. I love your skirt and look even your camera is matching (my camera is purple if anyone is interested)....(to Mindy) Mindy look how pretty she is' I was dumbfounded to say the least. My friends after the meet and greet all turned to me and said if you ever put yourself down again just remember you're wrong because Tori said you're pretty. I don't for one second think I'm even remotely attractive but to hear this woman who I admire so much and who is a beautiful person inside and out was weird and wonderful all at once. So we had the picture taken, another quick hug and then she moved onto to meeting my friends. I've loved all the times I've met Tori, something special always happens but this time it was unbelievable and had me on a bit of a high for the rest of the day.

Starving we went to the pub to wait for the other forum people. Me being me ended up spilling half my dinner on the floor. Its always a nice way to spend time before a gig, just hanging out in a pub however the inevitable had to happen and we made our way over to my last show of the tour.

Went in early to watch One EkimO perform again- very pleased to say I was the bass players side of the stage. That band definitely got better each night and I can't wait to hopefully catch them at a headline show.

As usual this show for me was bitter sweet, with it being my last show. The set list given the date was surprising but in a cool way. Body & Soul was a favourite from the previous tour which hadn't really been bought out this one. I loved here it again and was lovely seeing it as Tori rather than Santa, playful and full of energy it set the mood for the rest of the show. This was followed by a killer combo, Little Amsterdam is sexy as hell and almost funky live. Then Hotel.....fuck me HOTEL!!!! Another one I never ever thought I would here live. Everything about it was superb her voice was on top form for the tricky hight notes, the energy was insane and I was a happy puddle of Donna. I pray I get the opportunity to hear the song again in the future but if I don't I can die happy that the one time I did see it, it was extraordinary.

The Beekeeper album whilst being perfectly fine is not anybodies favourite album, however The Power of Orange Knickers I have to say kicked ass live. There was something quite 'driving' about it which worked really well. Considering she had played all UK dates for a week or so I still hadn't heard Welcome To England so I was very glad it finally made an appearance. I love this song, it worked well solo but was even better with the band. This was followed another shock, one of my favourites from Scarlet's Walk- Virginia. It was a pleasure to hear as she doesn't play as many songs from that album.

The Lizard Lounge yet again was strong, seldom played Mr. Zebra was a fun little (unexpected) aside. Not Red Baron was such an emotional moment and a more subtle nod to the events of September 11th, I was very much trying to hold back the tears. Beautifully performed, loved it. Ophelia is one of those songs which should have, in my opinion always have been solo so I'm glad it appeared in the Lizard Lounge section of the show, definitely better live more profound.

The second half of the show was intense. Siren and Precious Things were absolutely the most intense I've ever seen them. Tori was well into both of them playing for what seemed like ages, lost in the moment it was amazing to hear. Between those two songs was Fast Horse one of the new songs which I really wanted to hear. Big kudos goes to Jon Evans for playing guitar and bass pedals making the song sound full. To end the show and the final UK date of the tour was Tear In your Hand- Maybe maybe it's time to wave goodbye now, Time to wave goodbye now...” and with that it was over; another tour ending all too quickly. The stand out point for me this tour was the fact the set lists were so varied she really did take songs from all her albums and I loved it. Let's hope Tori does't leave it too long to come back.

I'm Actually Excited About Bits Of Material

So me being me, I had to....that was HAD TO order the limited collector's edition, all singing all dancing version of Biffy Clyro's new album Only Revolutions. The main reason for ordering this version- it was the only way to get the album on vinyl amongst other cool bits and bobs.

But wait just a moment today it got even better you actually get a bit of material from one of the flags off of the front cover of the album. I never thought I would actually be excited about a bit of material! After watching the video below of the Biffy boys making the first cut into the blue flag, it should be clear to anyone who knows me why I want a bit of the blue flag! *hint* it may have something to do with a certain fabulous redheaded bass player

Then, I find out they've added more merchandise to the online store and what do they have- possibly the best merch ever in the form of PILLOWCASES!!!! Obviously ridiculously overpriced but I must have them.

Dylan Moran on Life

I found an interview with Dylan Moran from a while ago and I love his view on life. Jonathan Ross asked him how he filled his days and I completely agree with his response...

J.R.- How do you fill your day then?

D.M.- That is a very personal question…

J.R.- Well, this is a chat show you're meant to open up

D.M.- I mean, its an amazingly personal question...how do you fill your day? How does anybody fill their day? I think the truth is you fill your day, most of the time by being in the washing machine of your own mind thinking what’s this, when does it stop, am I enjoying it? I don't know. Oh its time to go to sleep but I can't I'm worried!

Update Video
